JOHANNESBURG - The African National Congress (ANC) said it has completed its investigation into the underlying factors that contributed to its poor electoral performances in KwaZulu-Natal and Gauteng.
The ANC lost its majority in both provinces, forcing it to enter into provincial coalitions.
The party’s National Executive Committee (NEC) is meeting at the Birchwood Hotel in Boksburg on Saturday to consider the fate of its two provincial branches.
The ANC’s highest decision-making body in between conferences is faced with three choices on what to do with Gauteng and KwaZulu-Natal.
The first option is to leave provinces as they are, while the second is to send in reinforcements to their Provincial Executive Committees.
ANC national spokesperson Mahlengi Bhengu-Motsiri said the third choice is to disband the two provincial structures.
“Today really is about putting finality to a matter that has been going on for some time following the National Working Committee’s visit to the provinces of KwaZulu-Natal and Gauteng to assess the state of organisation and look at some of the underlying factors behind the electoral outcomes.”
A decision on the fate of the two provinces is expected either on Saturday or Sunday.
