DURBAN - The KwaZulu-Natal Department of Public Works and Infrastructure has vowed to mete out harsh consequences against anyone found guilty of fraud and corruption within the department.
The warning comes after a number of suspensions and the dismal of one of the senior managers.
KZN MEC for Public Works and Infrastructure, Martin Meyer, said he would not turn a blind eye to corruption, which is also costing the department billions of rand.
He briefed the media in Durban on Tuesday.
In October last year, the department suspended three officials while instituting a probe into a multi-million rand contract.
Early this year, the department dismissed its supply chain management director, Musa Zondi, due to corruption allegations amounting to over a billion rand.
Meyer said that more investigations targeting the department were underway.
"The department has successfully implemented the recommendations from 10 forensic investigations conducted by the Office of the Premier. As a result, 35 disciplinary actions have been taken, ranging from written warnings to suspensions without pay. Four disciplinary matters are ongoing, and six additional forensic investigations are currently underway under the Office of the Premier."
The department has also laid charges against corruption-accused individuals.
