CAPE TOWN - State prosecutors on Thursday outlined its case to show alleged underworld gang boss, Nafiz Modack, masterminded the murder of top cop Charl Kinnear.
Kinnear, who was investigating Modack at the time, was shot dead outside his Bishop Lavis home in September 2020.
Modack and 14 others face 122 charges related to various crimes, including Kinnear's murder.
State prosecutor, Greg Wolmarans, told the court that co-accused Zane Kilian admitted that Modack instructed him to track the whereabouts of Lieutenant Charl Kinnear.
Wolmarans submitted that on the day Kinnear was murdered, Kilian pinged the top cop's cell phone every three minutes, starting in the early hours of the morning.
He told the court it was clear that Kilian was in communication with the hitman because he stopped pinging Kinnear's phone immediately after the murder.
Wolmarans said evidence showed that following the shooting, Kilian also attempted to remove all traces of his pinging activities related to Kinnear.
The trial continues.
