Gogo Maweni granted R5k bail

JOHANNESBURG - Popular traditional healer, Gogo Maweni has been granted R5,000 bail. 

In her application, Makgotso Mofokeng told the court she is pregnant. 

Maweni was arrested more than a week ago on charges of assault stemming from a case in 2019.

Maweni's new lawyer, Riaan Gissing introduced several reasons why his client should be granted bail.

Maweni said her family, particularly her children depend on her and have been traumatised by the ordeal. 

Gissing also told the court that Maweni has struggled in her pregnancy saying she has not received proper prenatal medication. 

The defence also submitted evidence that Maweni is not a flight risk and has not attempted to leave the country in the past five years.
