CAPE TOWN - A fire ripped through the Taiwan informal settlement in Khayelitsha on Wednesday.

The City of Cape Town’s Disaster Risk Management teams have established a joint operations center in the area to assist residents affected.

Spokesperson for the city, Charlotte Powell, said it’s unclear how many structures were affected but said assessments were ongoing.

In the meantime, it’s requested its humanitarian aid partners to assist and provide any relief that they can to the people in the area.

"The results of the assessments will be forwarded to SASSA and the national Department of Human Settlements for further provision of relief. The DRMC will also activate relevant city services to help clear the fire site and restore any municipal services that might have been impacted."
