The African National Congress (ANC) has told its councillors to do the basics correctly to avoid hostility from the communities they serve.
This includes fixing potholes, making sure the streetlights are on and being available to communities always.
On Tuesday, the party hosted more than 4,000 of its councillors from across the country at the FNB Stadium in Soweto.

The ANC’s national leadership has communicated six key pillars for all its councillors.
They mainly deal with communicating with their communities the good and bad outcomes but also ensuring they form part of a capable and ethical government.
ANC president, Cyril Ramaphosa, said local government was all about getting the small things right.
"Comrades, streetlights lighting is a simple thing. It must happen. It is a function that we are capable of ensuring that it is executed. We are talking about simple things, that is why the call to action is a doable one."
The ANC said it would be running three-month reviews on all its councillors to track their individual progress in implementing the action plans.
