JOHANNESBURG - The National Energy Regulator of South Africa (NERSA) has approved a 12.7% tariff increase on electricity prices this year.
This is lower than the 36.15% hike that Eskom had requested.
At a media briefing on Thursday afternoon, NERSA also announced it had approved a 5.3% and 6.1% increases for the next two financial years.
These are also lower than the amounts requested by Eskom.
NERSA chairperson, Thembani Bukani: "Ladies and gentlemen, as you would appreciate that our challenge in regulating the electricity industry has always been and still remains this delicate balancing of the often conflicting requirements of all the stakeholders. We are required to ensure Eskom is sustainable within the short and long term. At the same time, we are required to ensure the electricity services Eskom provides are affordable."
