CAPE TOWN - The overbreeding of dogs has become a big concern for animal welfare groups.
Last month, the Cape of Good Hope SPCA (Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals) said it discovered 41 mutts at two properties in Cape Town.
Twenty-two were found in one backyard and 19 on the other premises.
SPCA spokesperson Belinda Abraham says the people living there were not in a position to look after the dogs.
"Without intervention, these dogs would have continued reproducing with each female potentially adding another 5 to 6 puppies with each breeding cycle and this is how the cycle of suffering continues.”
She added all the puppies were removed while others found homes with new families.
