Suzuki Swift becomes South Africa’s best-selling car

Suzuki's Swift had a stellar January.

Suzuki Swift becomes South Africa’s best-selling car

Lester Kiewit speaks to Janine van der Post, Motoring Editor at Wheels24, about the shift in car-buying patterns in South Africa.

Listen below:

Step aside Toyota Hilux, there's a new favourite on Mzansi streets swiftly taking over and outselling the beloved Hilux: the Suzuki Swift.

This is a major milestone for Suzuki who has also moved past the Volkswagen Polo Vivo, consistently becoming the second-best-selling car brand with monthly sales of 6,399.

The brand's Swift was South Africa's country's best-selling car in January.

"They usually sell about over 2,000 cars every month. As their numbers are growing, the Hilux didn't do as well as they usually, do so it's a significant milestone."

What makes the Suzuki Swift so attractive?

In the South African market, people want a car brand they trust for the daily commutes, that's reliable and established for an affordable price. The Swift's 1.2-litre engine is fuel-efficient and 'a sweet spot' for most buyers, says van der Post.

"For R220 000, where will you get this anywhere else right now?" Van der Post asks.

"The thing about the Swift is that it knows no age. To young family drivers, to older people and Uber drivers; I think Suzuki just has such a great product that it appeals to everybody."
