CAPE TOWN - Cape Town Mayor Geordin Hill-Lewis is calling on acting Police Minister Firoz Cachalia, to urgently deploy more resources to support the Western Cape’s anti-gang unit.
This follows yet another spate of gang violence in the city, including a triple murder in Eerste River earlier on Sunday.
Hill-Lewis is also appealing to national government to grant the city’s municipal police more investigative powers.
He says this would help improve conviction rates and strengthen violence prevention efforts.
"The testimonies from police officers in anti-gang units in the Western Cape about the growing sense of crisis inside the SAPS should be a wakeup call to government. Officers say that they don't have sufficient weapons, bullet proof vests or vehicles while they are expected to do dangerous work.”
