JOHANNESBURG - A community-based group convened in Burgers Park, Pretoria, on Wednesday morning, demanding free housing.
The National Social Ills group is set to march to the Social Development offices.
The group consists of applicants of the Reconstruction and Development Programme (RDP) housing project who have not yet received houses.
Established in 1994, the RDP project is a government-subsidised programme for low-income houses.
It's also meant to address homelessness.
The National Social Ills group said that while millions had benefited from the programme, many were still waiting.
Group leader, Motshidiso Shao, has been on a waiting list since 2008.
"We appeal to the minister that after so many years of waiting to be allocated RDP houses, we are waiting. There are people who applied for RDP houses from 1996 who still don’t have houses."
The group will be handing over a memorandum of demands at the Social Development office.
