27 February 2025 | 12:33Hunt has left his mark over the last three decades.
The name Gavin Hunt is well-known throughout the South African football landscape.
He has left his impact at the likes of Moroka Swallows, Bidvest Wits, and Kaizer Chiefs.
We cannot forget SuperSport United, with whom the coach won three of his four league titles.
947’s Robert Marawa sat down with Hunt to reflect on his recent historical achievement of 1,000 games in the Premier Soccer League (PSL).
While he is proud of the tremendous achievement, Hunt says the journey has not been without challenges.
“There’s always certain games you remember but certainly wherever I have been I haven’t really started that well, the first seasons. That Swallows game when we lost 5–0 to Pirates? Jeez, I got slaughtered.”
– Gavin Hunt, coach – SuperSport United
“I have always said the secret is the bounce-back factor after you’ve lost. I always say to all the young coaches of today, you can get down when you lose… [but] you’ve got to keep believing in the process… try and do it again.”
– Gavin Hunt, coach – SuperSport United
With 1,000 games in the pocket, it is only onward and upward for Hunt as he shows no signs of slowing down.
Parting with a few words of wisdom, he reminds young and upcoming coaches to consistently test themselves.
“I think in football you’ve got to keep testing yourself, you’ve got to keep asking yourself questions and keep upskilling yourself.”
– Gavin Hunt, coach – SuperSport United
“As a coach you’ve got to reflect every day on yourself… If you don’t look at yourself every single day you will not move forward.”
– Gavin Hunt, coach – SuperSport United
