JOHANNESBURG - The Information Regulator has committed to submitting a detailed report to Justice Minister Mmamoloko Kubayi outlining steps to ensure the sex offender publication complies with POPIA (Protection of Personal Information Act) requirements.
Introduced in 2013 the law promotes the protection of personal information processed by public and private institutions.
Last week Kubayi delayed the publication of the sex offenders list over concerns related to its alignment with the Popi Act.
Currently, legislation for the compilation, maintenance and dissemination of the national register prevents its publication.
Information Regulator spokesperson Mukelani Dimba said: "An additional concern for the regulator was that it was not clear, how the Department of Justice intended to ensure that the publication of the register would be consistent with the eight conditions for the lawful processing of personal information in terms of the protection of personal information act. This submission will detail aspects of popia that will need to be addressed for the publication of the register.
