Shoprite is growing its shopping list for Sixty60, and also expanding from Checkers only to Shoprite stores as well.

Stephen Grootes talks to CEO Pieter Engelbrecht after Shoprite Holdings posts its half-year results.

Shoprite Holdings reported increased market share in the food retail business on Tuesday, and also announced the expansion of its (Checkers) Sixty60 delivery business.

For the half-year to end-December 2024, group sales increased by 9.6 % to R128.6 billion.

Trading profit was up 13.5% to R7.3 billion.

Headline earnings per share (HEPS) rose almost 10% to 662.3 cents a share.

For Supermarkets RSA, Shoprite's core business in South Africa (including Checkers, Shoprite and Usave), sales of merchandise increased by over 10% to R107.7 billion.

This impressive performance results from a sustained multi-year strategy focused on business expansion and market leadership, says Shoprite Holdings CEO Pieter Engelbrecht.

Interim dividend per share increased by 6.7%% to 285 cents.

In conversation with Stephen Grootes, Engelbrecht says they're very pleased with customer growth of 4.9%, knowing that shoppers have a lot of choices out there.

"There's a common belief that prices never come down but always go up. We went and checked and I can confirm that 35% of items that we sell have shown a deflation in the last six months; in other words prices DO come down."

When it comes to the continuing success of the Sixty60 delivery service, they see a new record almost weekly, Engelbrecht reports.

Aside from adding general merchandise to the digital platform, it's also being expanded from only Checkers outlets to Shoprite stores.

A pilot servicing three stores has proven there is demand from Shoprite customers, and the plan is to expand to 19 shops countrywide.

"Shoprite has quite a diverse customer profile....We need to make sure we can pinpoint what portion of the Shoprite market Sixty60 appeals to."
