Ekurhuleni Mayor Xhakaza vows to crack the whip on corrupt city officials

JOHANNESBURG - Ekurhuleni Mayor Doctor Xhakaza has vowed to crack the whip on corrupt city officials, who've been tarnishing the metro's reputation through corruption.
Xhakaza said some city officials have been engaging in questionable activities that have brought the metro into disrepute.
He referenced the manipulation of electricity accounts, allegedly by senior municipal officials, which led to almost R300 million in revenue losses.

Xhakaza said his mayoral committee has been trying to take action against corrupt city officials but they're being blocked from doing so.
“Senior management are putting some of these councillors in their pockets and these councillors are hellbent to do anything to actually see that these reports don’t get to council.”
He said there are a number of senior city officials who've done nothing but steal from the public purse.
“We must clean this city from the rot that has contributed so much to losses of the public money and I’m here to do that.”
Ekurhuleni has been riddled by corruption in the last few years, with several city officials found to be at the centre of some questionable activities.
