JOHANNESBURG - The Electoral Commission of South Africa (IEC) said there was a coordinated effort by some political parties to delegitimise 2024’s election results.

The Electoral Court dealt with over 40 cases relating to the 2024 general elections.

IEC’s deputy chief electoral officer, Masego Sheburi, said this was the most litigated election in the country’s democratic history.

Sheburi said while the commission is not beyond reproach, he is encouraged by the fact that all challenges to the final election results were dismissed by the courts.

“What is worrying is that in this election we have had in excess of 40 legal challenges, and you could tell some were coordinated without evidence, and the true purpose was to impugn the good standing of the commission.”
