JOHANNESBURG - Tributes continue to pour in for renowned playwright, novelist and director Athol Fugard.

The 92-year-old died on Saturday.

Cape Town Mayor Geordin Hill-Lewis conveyed the city’s condolences, highlighting Fugard's deep personal and professional connection to Cape Town.

Born in Middelburg, Eastern Cape, Fugard attended the University of Cape Town, initially studying philosophy and anthropology before dedicating himself to the arts.

Throughout his career, he received numerous accolades, including civic honors from the City of Cape Town in 2023 and the Order of Ikhamanga in silver from the South African government in 2005, recognising his exceptional contributions to theatre.

Hill-Lewis has acknowledged Fugard's impact on theatre and his unwavering opposition to apartheid.

"He was not just a luminary in the world of theatre; he was a teller of profound stories of hope and resilience about South Africa. We are grateful to have known him and grateful that we honored him with Cape Town civic honours before his passing."
