JOHANNESBURG - Ekurhuleni Speaker of Council Nthabiseng Tshivhenga has been accused of using her position to protect herself from the fraud and corruption allegations levelled against her.
In a letter sent to the secretary to the council, the Democratic Alliance (DA) said that Tshivhenga had abused her powers to prevent her matter from being heard in the council.

According to a confidential report by the Ekurhuleni Metro Police Department, which Eyewitness News has seen, an employee in her office blew the lid on the alleged fraudulent activities.
Although Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) Speaker of Council in Ekurhuleni Nthabiseng Tshivhenga has denied being involved in questionable activities, the DA believes the council needs to deploy resources to uncover the facts.
The party, in a confidential letter seen by EWN, claims Tshivhenga deliberately disrupted council proceedings in an attempt to prevent a report implicating her in fraud and corruption activities from being heard in council.
DA Chief Whip Lucky Dinake has accused Tshivhenga of abusing her power to evade accountability.
"Councillor Tshivhenga has abused the position of Speaker of Council to shield herself from the investigation. This is an egregious abuse of power."
Last year, Tshivhenga survived a no-confidence vote and another one that was scheduled to be heard in council two weeks ago was withdrawn by the Inkatha Freedom Party (IFP).
