On Thursday, the department held a memorial service for nine victims who died in a bus crash on the N2 highway on Sunday.

DURBAN - The Department of Transport in KwaZulu-Natal said it will deploy a heavy police presence before the busy Easter period.

On Thursday, the department held a memorial service for nine victims who died in a bus crash on the N2 highway on Sunday.

The victims were members of the 12 Apostle Church in Trinity and were travelling from a church gathering.

When asked about road safety plans moving forward, Transport MEC Siboniso Duma assured that damage control efforts are underway.

“We’ve started a new trend, like for instance, as we are going towards Easter, it means the religious sector will be the focal point and will be a focus area.”

Duma said vehicles that are not roadworthy will be impounded.

“We will visit different taxi associations, and buses will be inspected. We are going to launch the Easter campaign in this belt of KwaDukuza/Mandeni area because it is a focus area."
