KwaZulu-Natal Police Commissioner Nhlanhla Mkhwanazi has revealed how KZN’s political killings task team was roped in to assist with investigations in Gauteng.

He was testifying on day 1 of public hearings in the Madlanga Commission of Inquiry in Pretoria.

He said that the call for assistance for the political killings task team to assist Gauteng organised crime came from intelligence head, Dumisani Khumalo.

The KZN political killings task team were requested to assist Gauteng organised crime in their investigation into the assassination of Vereeniging engineer, Armand Swart.

Swart was killed in a case of mistaken identity after his company filed a whistleblower report to Transnet regarding price inflation.

Mkhwanazi alleges that the Gauteng detectives, as well as the prosecution team assigned to the case, began receiving threats following the arrest of three people for Swarts' murder.

Reading from a letter sent to him by the senior public prosecutor, Mkhwanazi detailed how much the accused were paid for the hit.

"The investigation has proven that all three accused are involved in a serious organised crime syndicate in which almost a million rand was offered for the assassination in this regard."

Given the threats against the team investigating the case, Mkhwanazi said that a team from outside the province, the political killings task team, were requested to investigate the matter.
