JOHANNESBURG - Conservative media commentator, Leo Brent Bozell III, has been nominated as the USA's ambassador to South Africa.
The nomination was published on the US Congress’s official website on Tuesday.
Since Donald Trump took the presidency three months ago, Washington has been without an ambassador to South Africa amid the deteriorating relationship between the two governments.
Leo Bozell is the founder of Media Research Center, an organisation whose sole mandate is to expose liberal bias in the media.
Trump had initially nominated him to head up the USA's Agency for Global Media, however, that nomination was withdrawn and he has now been tipped to become the ambassador to South Africa.
Bozell's son was recently pardoned by Trump after being convicted in 2023 for assaulting a police officer during the failed January 6th insurrection.
Over the next few weeks, Bozell will appear before the senate foreign relations committee, where a vote will be taken to confirm his nomination.
