ANC spokesperson Akhona Jonginamba said Majingo left because he was aware that his position would be under review at its upcoming provincial executive committee meeting.

CAPE TOWN - The African National Congress (ANC) in the City of Cape Town has welcomed the resignation of its former councillor, Banele Majingo.

On Thursday, he announced that he would be joining the Democratic Alliance (DA).

According to the DA, Majingo's reason for his move was that he was committed to the DA's pursuit of clean governance and economic growth.

But ANC spokesperson Akhona Jonginamba said Majingo left because he was aware that his position would be under review at its upcoming provincial executive committee meeting.

"The reasons stated by Majingo are false, they are not true at all. This is all about him safeguarding his position in council with the coming local election in 2026. It has nothing to do with clean governance of the DA and so forth."

Jonginamba said that Majingo was implicated in an investigation into electoral fraud in 2021.

"The annual report done by a commission that was set up by the ANC, led by Deputy President Kgalema Motlanthe, where an investigation was done on the selection process of candidates for the 2021 local elections, comrade Banele Majingo’s name was top on the list as part of those who have manipulated the process of candidate selection."
