JOHANNESBURG - Hundreds of residents living in limbo at the Marry Me informal settlement in Soshanguve are set to be handed a lifeline as the Gauteng provincial government confirms plans to formalise the area.
The commitment by the government to rebuild follows renewed tensions in the north of Pretoria after six community patrollers were killed almost a week ago.
It’s understood they were shot, stoned and burnt in a brutal act that rocked the area, raising concerns about safety and other issues of service delivery.
Speaking at the memorial service of the slain patrollers on Wednesday, Gauteng Premier Panyaza Lesufi said the municipality now owns the land, which means formalisation processes at the informal settlement can now begin.
“I’m glad to report that the municipality has bought the land and together we must start the process of appropriately formalising this area.”
