More than 50 people have been placed in temporary self-catering facilities in the city centre, with the department hoping to place at least 100 by the end of Friday.
Spokesperson Ndabezinhle Sibiya said: "The MEC has further indicated that arrangements are being made for the residents to receive a meal this afternoon, and then moving forward, there will be breakfast and supper, which will be provided to the families for the next 14 days. And then, packed food packs will be arranged for the families so that they can start cooking for themselves."
