CAPE TOWN - Animal welfare authorities say the Cape baboon troops in the fire-ravaged deep south are all accounted for.

The Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (SPCA)’s fire-trained team has also joined fire officers to tend to wild animals caught in the fire’s path.

Teams from the SPCA were deployed to assist families in evacuating their pets and horses in upper Tokai on Sunday, as the fire spread dangerously close to homes and stables.

SJ Equestrian’s Sarah-Jane Lazarus says they’re ready to help animals in need.

“I have a riding school in Constantia. We’ve been on standby to evacuate horses. We’ve had three go the yard now. We know for now, most horses that can be boxed out have been evacuated. Others have just been walked out. From an equestrian point of view, most horses have been evacuated, but we are on standby should anyone need some help.”
