WSU employee accused of killing Sisonke Mbolekwa says his intention was to fire warning shots

MTHATHA - The Walter Sisulu University employee accused of killing a student said that his intentions were to fire warning shots.
Mampane is applying for bail in the Mthatha Magistrates Court on Tuesday.
He faces murder, attempted murder, unlawful possession of an unlicensed firearm with intent to commit a crime, possession of unlicensed firearm and ammunition.

A postmortem has since indicated that Sisonke Mbolekwa was killed as a result of a gunshot.
The murder accused, Manelisi Mampane, told the court that he went to fetch his firearm when a group of protesters started a commotion outside his campus residence during the student protest.
He also admitted to discharging the firearm, saying that a group of young man were kicking his door recklessly.
But he said his intention was to fire warning shots.
However, Mampane said he then heard other shots being fired from the outside.
Looking remorseful, he apologised to the families of the slain and injured students.
Meanwhile, a group of students were singing outside the court demanding justice for Sisonke Mbolekwa.
