JOHANNESBURG - The man accused of brutally stabbing a young Pick n Pay cashier to death at her workplace will remain behind bars after choosing to abandon his bail application.
The shocking incident has left the victim’s family demanding answers from the retail chain over safety at the store.
Anele Kula appeared at the Protea Glen Magistrates Court on Monday on a charge of murder of his 22-year-old girlfriend Sinenhlanhla Mathonsi.
It is reported that on Sunday, he went into the store at the Protea Glen Mall with a knife and repeatedly stabbed his girlfriend, who worked as a cashier.
Mathonsi’s family is now seeking answers from her employer.
Mathonsi’s guardian, Lungile Dlamini, said she thought her daughter was safe at work until Sunday.
"He walked up to her and stabbed her. She was heard screaming and then he started dragging her. Everyone was watching while she kept screaming," she said.
Kula was arrested on the same day and remains in custody.
The case was postponed to 30 June 2025 for further investigations.
