CAPE TOWN - Saturday is World Lupus Awareness Day and the Western Cape health department is shining a spotlight on the chronic autoimmune disease.
The department is urging greater support for those living with the disease.
This year’s theme, "Belonging, Belief and Breakthroughs", highlights the resilience of those living with lupus and the ongoing search for better treatments and support.
Lupus is a chronic condition that can flare up due to stress, sunlight, or infection, often causing fatigue, joint pain and in some cases isolation.
Paediatric rheumatologist, Dr Deepthi Abraham, who herself lives with the condition, says her personal experience helps her relate more deeply to her patients.
"Living with lupus has instilled in me a deep appreciation for life and the importance of each moment. Lupus can be overwhelming, affecting individuals differently, and bringing on symptoms such as fatigue, joint pain and social isolation."
Abraham says children with lupus often experience more severe symptoms and parents need to be alert to the early signs.
"For parents and caregivers, it’s vital to educate them about lupus to ensure regular medical check-ups and promote a healthy lifestyle. Protecting children from sun exposure, providing emotional support, and maintaining an open communication about their feelings are extremely important."
