JOHANNESBURG - The mother of an 11-year-old Boksburg girl who was raped allegedly by a family friend says she has been blamed and chastised by those in her community following her child's abuse.

The child was raped in December, allegedly while visiting a couple that was close to her parents.

Her mother discovered the girl's pregnancy four months later and reported the crime.

A man has since been arrested and will return to the Boskburg Magistrates' court on Wednesday.

The family of the 11-year-old girl and her alleged rapist are Ugandan nationals and part of a tight knit community in South Africa.

The child's mother says while she has been supported by some who heard about the rape of her child, she has also been judged by many.

"People came out and said I am the one who gave permission to this gentlement to rape my child, I was negligent, I don’t know how. You gave your child away to be raped, I got those comments."

She said she's also been asked why she didn’t notice the pregnancy earlier.

"The reason I didn’t notice is simple. I'm not raising a teenager, I’m raising a child, a minor. I know her movements, if maybe she was a teenager and I have seen her with boys."

The suspect will continue with his bid for bail.
