DURBAN - The Economic Freedom Fighters Youth Command (EFFYC) said that it wants police watchdog IPID to drop its investigation into KwaZulu-Natal police boss Nhlanhla Mkhwanazi.
The party’s youth wing held a march in Durban in support of Mkhwanazi.
IPID is probing the KZN police commissioner for interfering with the arrest of a senior correctional service official in 2023.
But the Red Berets’ youth wing said that Mkhwanazi is being targeted for intensifying the fight against crime in the province.
Hundreds of students from various institutions of higher learning and education have joined the EFF Youth Command painting the streets of Durban red.
They marched to the KZN police head offices to raise concerns about the IPID probe.
The EFF youth wing believes the investigation is politically motivated.
EFF youth leader Sihle Lonzi said “We believe that General Mkhwanazi because he has been uncovering corruption, fighting crime here in KZN - the criminal politicians in government are the ones who are fighting with him and they want to take out investigations on him and they want to accuse of various things because he is releasing their crime and corruption in the province.”
IPID previously said that it will not comment on the matter until its investigation is concluded.
