CAPE TOWN - The African National Congress (ANC) is mourning the passing of ANC Women’s League deputy president, Lungi Mnganga-Gcabashe, who died on Saturday.
Mnganga Gcabashe was the ANC Women’s League deputy president after her election in 2023. She also served as the chairperson of the portfolio committee on tourism and was a member of the ANC’s national executive committee (NEC).
She was 65 years old.
The ANC said that Mnganga-Gcabashe would leave behind a "powerful legacy of principled leadership", saying she was unyielding in her love for her people.
In a statement, party spokesperson Mahlengi Bhengu-Motsiri said that her passing left a “deep void in the liberation movement as a whole”.
The party said that Mnganga-Gcabashe had a history of activism and was elected by residents to represent them in peace committees during what it said were "some of the darkest years of political violence" in her home province of KwaZulu-Natal.
In Parliament, the ANC said she embodied "quiet strength and ethical oversight", having served as chairperson of the portfolio committee on public enterprises, and most recently as the chairperson of the portfolio committee on tourism.
