CAPE TOWN - The City of Cape Town has confirmed the arrest of two law enforcement officers for kidnapping and extortion.

This followed an internal investigation by the Safety and Security Investigations Unit.

It's alleged that the officers, attached to the Metal Theft Unit, kidnapped two men in Khayelitsha and demanded a ransom for their release.

Safety and Security MMC JP Smith said the Unit followed up on a tip-off and alerted the police.

Smith said search warrants were obtained, and the officers were arrested on Tuesday.

He added that they will cooperate with the South African Police Service (SAPS) to ensure a swift conclusion to the investigation and prosecution.

While the police investigation is underway, Smith confirmed the municipality's internal disciplinary processes are also in effect.

He said his directorate is committed to eliminating corrupt and criminal elements from his department and will not hesitate to investigate and take the required action when wrongdoing is uncovered.
