JOHANNESBURG - Renowned South African actor, Presley Chweneyagae, has died.

Close friends to the actor confirmed that he passed in the early hours of Tuesday morning.

He was 40 years old.

Chweneyagae shot to international fame in 2005 when he starred in the Oscar-winning South African film, "Tsotsi", which not only won an Oscar, but also hearts across the globe.

He played the role of a young gangster with a stolen baby, a bruised heart, who dominated the streets of Johannesburg.

The role also earned him his first Golden Horn at the first SAFTAs (South African Film and Television Awards) in 2006.

After “Tsotsi”, Presley continued to grace local screens in productions like "The River" where he played “Cobra” as well as a spin-off show based on the same character.

It was his versatility that kept fans glued to the screens.

As South Africa mourns one of its cinematic sons, fans remember the villain, hero, misunderstood uncle and fierce advocate for the arts.
