JOHANNESBURG - Some opposition parties have accused Competition Minister, Parks Tau, of awarding an almost R200 billion lottery contract to African National Congress (ANC)-linked businessman.
On Wednesday, Tau announced Sizekhaya Holdings had won the hotly contested bid to become the 4th national lottery and sports pool license holder.
Sizekhaya will replace Ithuba Holdings, which has held the licence since 2015.
The Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) says the awarding of the contract to Sizekhaya Holdings is corrupt as the consortium is linked to politically connected KwaZulu-Natal (KZN) businessmen Sandile Zungu and Moses Tembe.
While Zungu has demonstrated links with the ANC, no such exist for Tembe.
Both men have interests in Goldrush Group, which owns 50% of Sizekhaya Holdings.
Build One South Africa (BOSA) deputy president, Nobuntu Hlazo-Webster, said the party wants the minister to publicly disclose all details regarding the contract.
“This is the largest public tender in the country, yet this process has been shrouded in secrecy and now there has been an awarding to a consortium led by individuals with clear political ties to the ANC."
Meanwhile, the betting giant, Goldrush Group, has announced it will reduce its ownership stake in Sizekhaya Holdings from 50 to 40% to comply with lottery licence regulations.
