CAPE TOWN - Police divers and a K9 search and rescue unit are continuing the search for a young boy at Mdumbi Beach, Eastern Cape.

The National Sea Rescue Institute (NSRI) said that he was one of four children who were caught in a rip current, while swimming at the beach on Sunday.

Volunteers from the Mdumbi Backpackers, who were present, managed to rescue three of the children.

They were later joined by NSRI and municipal lifeguards in the search for the remaining child.

NSRI spokesperson Craig Lambinon: "A female, age 13, was medically treated on the beach for non-fatal drowning symptoms and in a serious but stable condition she was taken to hospital by a family member - she is expected to make a full recovery. The remaining two girls were not injured."
