JOHANNESBURG - Gauteng police have launched a manhunt following the discovery of a body at the Zamimpilo informal settlement in Riverlea.
Police said they were conducting a routine patrol in the area on Tuesday night when they identified a suspicious vehicle with three people in it.
When they tried to stop the Toyota bakkie from driving away, the vehicle fled the scene, leading them into the informal settlement.
Police spokesperson Mavela Masondo explained that there was an exchange of fire between the police and the suspects.
"The police tried to stop the vehicle, but the driver ignored them and sped off. A chase ensued and the suspects turned into Zamimpilo informal settlement. As the police were searching for the suspects, they were shot at by the people who were in the informal settlement, and they shot back."
