CAPE TOWN - The Muizenberg Police Station in Cape Town has been criticised at a crime imbizo in Vrygrond for poor service delivery.

On Thursday, senior Western Cape police officials met with residents from the greater Muizenberg area, including Vrygrond, Lavender Hill, and Overcome Heights.

Gun violence in these areas, attributed to clashes between taxi associations and gangs, has increased in recent weeks.

Inadequate police officers and police vans at the Muizenberg police station, and corruption are just some of the grievances raised by frustrated community members at the crime imbizo.

“We phone them but no vehicles are available. The problem is that they take vehicles home or they park at the BP garage at night eating there, playing on their phones or sleeping in the vans, but there are no vehicles available for us.”

The Deputy Provincial Police Commissioner, Luyanda Damayi, says corruption within the police ranks is being dealt with.

“We arrested six cops yesterday [Wednesday], we are not talking about something that happened last month, we arrested six of our own.”

Damoyi is encouraging community members to report corrupt police officers.
