JOHANNESBURG - The City of Johannesburg says it won’t spend any money to compensate members of the newly formed task team established to help revive the city.

Mayor Dada Morero has launched what he refers to as a "bomb squad", which is a group tasked with ensuring the effective implementation of service delivery plans.

The team includes African National Congress (ANC) veteran Snuki Zikalala, former city manager Trevor Fowler, and ten other senior government officials.

Speaking at a media briefing in Soweto on Thursday, Morero says members of the bomb squad are offering their services free of charge.

“There’s no budget allocated to the bomb squad. The Bomb Squad is made up of individuals that have responsibilities in other departments of government or in the private sector. So they are giving their time and expertise free of charge.”

He says only Zikalala will be paid.

“We will allocate [funds] to Mr Zikalala because we want him to be almost on the full-time basis, but it will be a stipend.”
