BOKSBURG - Frik van Rensburg, the lawyer representing a man accused of raping and impregnating an 11-year-old child, has told the court that the minor could have made the allegations for ulterior purposes.

Van Rensburg is delivering his closing arguments before the Boksburg Magistrates Court in the 29-year-old’s fight to be released on bail.

The court previously heard that the minor denied having sex when her mother noticed the change in her body due to pregnancy.

It was only after further probing that the child confided in her mother, alleging that the man, who is a family friend, had raped her, first in December 2019 and again in December 2024.

In the absence of DNA results, which could take about nine months, the State’s case hinges on the child’s statement.

Van Rensburg questioned how the court was supposed to accept the child’s version of events when it was initially rejected by her mother.

“this prompting of the victim should and could with all due respect also be indicative of an ulterior motive and most certainly should suffice as proof of the fact that not even the minor child's own mother believed the initially yet the court is expected to believe all the alleged incidents as contained in their statement.”
