EC Health Dept sends more rescue personnel to help teams in flooded Mthatha areas

JOHANNESBURG - The Eastern Cape Department of Health has sent more rescue personnel to assist teams in Mthatha, where heavy rains have led to severe flooding.
Teams are currently using a helicopter to rescue residents who have sought refuge on rooftops and in trees.

The South African Weather Service (SAWS) has issued a level 9 warning for heavy rains and floods, as well as snowfall and icy temperatures.
Health Department spokesperson Sizwe Kupelo said the teams from Gqeberha, East London, and the Chris Hani District are headed to Mthatha.
“We have conducted a number of rescue operations, and a number of residents have been successfully rescued.”
