Over 80 houses destroyed due to bad weather in KZN

DURBAN - Over 80 houses have been destroyed by severe weather conditions in parts of KwaZulu-Natal as inclement weather persists. 

The province recorded thick snowfall in Harry Gwala, and parts of the uGu district on Monday. 

The weather service has issued alert level 2 and 4 warnings for hailstorms, strong winds, rain and thunderstorms for the province.

The Cooperative Governance department said that as inclement weather continues to batter around six of the eleven districts in KZN.

The uGu district in the southern part of the province has been confirmed to be the hardest hit, with 47 households destroyed leaving around 277 people homeless. 

KZN Cooperative Governance MEC Thulasizwe Buthelezi said "a number of households, schools, and public infrastructure have been severely damaged by strong winds. We are relieved no fatalities have been reported at this stage.”

The MEC has re-iterated the call for residents to be on high alert. 

“We continue to urge the public to remain vigilant and seek shelter in safer places where they foresee danger. Minor to moderate injuries have been reported," said Buthelezi.

Other affected areas include the Umdoni and Umzumbe local municipalities in the south coast where six houses were destroyed by uprooted trees.
