CAPE TOWN -The City of Cape Town is calling on residents to ensure their gutters are clean as more rain is predicted this weekend.

It said the rivers, Canals and Waterways in the metro will also be undergoing routine maintenance as part of its winter preparedness plans.

The MMC for Water and Sanitation, Zahid Badroodien, says these clean-ups form part of its efforts to reduce floods and improve water quality.

"This year we expect to remove about 85,000 square meters of reeds as part of our seasonal preparedness. This is in addition to other waste that we find as a result of dumping and littering into our storm water systems."

Badroodien said the clean-ups also assist with reducing the burden on the city's sewer networks.

"I also want to encourage our residents to please make sure that down pipes from gutters in their homes, and other business complexes are not directed into our sewer gullies."
