CAPE TOWN - The community of Mitchells Plain in Cape Town said it's not in favour of a Cape Town teacher accused of sexually grooming a grade 7 pupil to be released on bail.

The 35-year-old woman applied for bail at the Mitchells Plain Magistrates Court on Monday.

She's accused of sending explicit messages and a video to a 13-year-old primary school pupil last month.

Her lawyer told the court that the messages do not prove sexual grooming, and the teacher will plead not guilty when her case goes to trial.

The Mitchells Plain Magistrates Court has received a petition from concerned residents, pleading for the court not to release the 35-year-old teacher on bail.

A concerned parent told EWN that the community has been overtaken by fear since the incident happened.

"I'm also a parent of minor children and my fear is if this is happening only at that primary school or is it happening at each and every school?" said the parent.

The teacher will know next week Tuesday if she'll be granted bail or not.

For now, she'll remain in custody.
