PRETORIA – The Democratic Alliance (DA) has faced another defeat, this time in the City of Tshwane, where its motion of no confidence against council Speaker Mncedi Ndzwanana failed.

The DA accuses Ndzwanana of bias

Councillors voted on the motion on Thursday, with the majority supporting Ndzwanana, whom the DA accuses of bias, to remain in his role.

Ndzwanana, the sole African Transformation Movement (ATM) councillor in Tshwane, has occupied the position for over two years now.

The African National Congress (ANC)-led coalition in the City of Tshwane council has backed Ndzwanana.

With the council consisting of 214 seats, the DA needed at least 108 votes for its motion of no confidence to succeed.

However, the coalition made up of the ANC, Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF), and ActionSA holds the majority, which was enough to keep Ndzwanana in his position.

Councillor Naeema Patel announced the results.

This comes just a day after the DA’s motion of no confidence against Joburg Mayor Dada Morero and council whip Sthembiso Zungu also fell flat.

Ndzwanana has labelled a failed motion of confidence against him as frivolous.

Speaking to reporters on Thursday afternoon, Ndzwanana says his focus is to execute his job.

"I’m ready to continue with the task as a speaker to preside over the council in a fair and consistent manner, allowing all members within the rules of the council to engage in debates and not suppress any member."
