CAPE TOWN - Cape Town Mayor Geordin Hill-Lewis said that the City of Cape Town had lowered the tariff proposals in its budget, which is set to be tabled at a full council meeting on Thursday.

Hill-Lewis said the city reworked its budget after listening to residents' concerns about its proposals for some homeowners to pay up to 40% more for municipal bills.

Hill-Lewis said the city had made significant changes to its budget since it was tabled in March.

Some of the relief measures include extending the "first R450,000 free" benefit to all homes valued up to R7 million.

Pensioners will also benefit from the rebate after the qualifying threshold was raised to R27,000 monthly income per household.

"We've softened the proposals. The budget always protected the lower-value homes the most. So, homes under R2.5 million in value are getting very, very low increases indeed."

Other relief measures include lower fixed water charges for properties between R1 million and R25 million.
