Mayco member for safety and security, JP Smith, announced the initiative as part of the city's municipal budget for the new financial year.
Smith said the new city budget, which includes a R40 billion three-year infrastructure investment, will finance the deployment of the new cops.
"The approval of the City of Cape Town budget paves the way for the deployment of neighbourhood safety officers, which will see five metro police officers deployed to each ward of the city."
Smith said the new officers will work on flexible shift systems.
"...which can be adapted locally in consultation with management and also provides for equipment and vehicles for these officers, which will be deployed from regional or area bases to the wards."
