JOHANNESBURG - Some Metrobus commuters are protesting against a new ticket payment system in the Johannesburg CBD.

Metrobus said the system was based on the distance travelled by a commuter.

Previously, passengers used to pay without measuring the kilometres that they had travelled, but it seems things might change from Tuesday.

Commuters are not pleased with the new system, which will require them to measure the distance travelled by tapping in when they get into the bus and tapping out when they get off.

Passengers have expressed frustration, saying they will now have to pay twice for their daily commute, adding that the bus service is already unreliable.

Metrobus said they had noted the minimal number of commuters who had raised concerns about the new system, since it cut off a lot of what it said was "free travel".

It has added, however, that most of its commuters were registering for the new system.
