CAPE TOWN - A 37-year-old woman from Tafelsig in Mitchells Plain is set to appear in court on Thursday for abducting a baby.

The newborn baby was snatched by a woman known to the mother at Middestad Mall in Bellville on Saturday.

The woman was arrested on Monday after being tracked down by police.

The baby boy’s mother reportedly fell ill while in the company of the suspect.

She then asked the suspect to hold the baby while she went to the bathroom, but when she returned, the woman had disappeared with the newborn child.

It is alleged that the suspect groomed the mother by giving her money and paying her medical bills during her pregnancy.

The baby was reunited with his mother after the suspect was arrested in Tafelsig, Mitchells Plain, on Monday.

"The team pounced on an address in Honolulu Street in Tafelsig on Monday, where they found the child and, in the process, detained a 37-year-old female for kidnapping,” said police spokesperson Frederick van Wyk.

The suspect is due to make her first appearance in the Bellville Magistrates Court.
