KwaZulu-Natal - A court has handed a life sentence to a 38-year-old man for the rape of three minor children.

Elphius Shabangu appeared before the Madadeni Magistrates Court for sentencing on Friday, after police linked him to the rape of three girls.

According to police, Shabangu approached a group of siblings who were selling sugarcane along the roadside. He then asked 2 of the sisters to go check for something at a nearby shop before repeatedly sexually assaulting the remaining 11-year-old girl.

He then fled the province to Mpumalanga, where he assaulted two other minors.

KZN National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) spokesperson Natshana Ramkisson-Kara said Shabangu pled guilty to all three counts of rape and was sentenced to two terms of life imprisonment.

“Sexual offences will not be tolerated in our society and will be met with the full force of the law.

"The NPA remains steadfast in our commitment to uphold the rule of law and pursue justice for victims of crime, especially the most vulnerable.”
