CAPE TOWN - The Stellenbosch University (SU) choir has taken top honours at the Interkultur European Choir Games in Denmark, winning three gold medals.

The choir was the only group representing the African continent at the global competition.

Choir conductor, André van der Merwe, said that the SU choir had earned an excellent reputation.

"I’m so proud of my students, it’s been a long, long journey, many of the students in the choir don’t read notes, they just do this for the love of it. I look at the marks, not necessarily at the gold or silver, silver or bronze, we got 96, 95, 95 comma something. That is an incredible compliment at an international level."

A student who was part of the choir added that he wouldn't change how they performed at all.

"I am very, very grateful that this is a competition that I get to be a part of. I know this is something that we prepped for, I know this is something that we worked really hard for, I have to say thank you to Andre, our conductor, he prepped us well."
